With the ongoing success of social media companies such as Facebook, Twitter and AOL, it is no surprise that they are ‘upgrading’ their headquarters in California.  Facebook and AOL upgraded their offices in Palo Alto, while Twitter upgraded their offices in the SoMa district of San Francisco.  Facebook’s HQ’s, formerly a 150,000 square foot lab facility has been transformed to reflect the company’s core values: creativity, freedom of expression and individuality. The design team at Studio O+A conceived a vibrant, fresh, hip space that is also very green: from restored millwork from the original lab, to high-recycle content carpeting to using repurposed industrial components throughout. The space is very modern and dynamic, just what you would expect from a company like Facebook. Ironically, employees are even encouraged to “write on their walls.”  

 On the other ‘tweet’, Twitter’s HQs are mainly designed by founder Ev Williams and his wife Sara. Whereas Facebook’s Headquarters were impeccably designed, Twitter’s are more reserved: a nice open plan space, but nothing more than usually decadent. The space is leased from Bebo/AOL (another social networking site), but was upgraded for a minimalist, contemporary and simple interior design – much like the social media itself!  On the other hand, AOL in an attempt to reshape its online brand commissioned O+A Studio to reshape its West Coast headquarters in Palo Alto , giving it a fresh, new look. The design embodies the elements of the new AOL - transparency, collaboration, creativity and playfulness - to create a stimulating environment for the staff.
