Once Upon a Sponge Exhibition

Creative platform papairlines proudly present the design art exhibition Once Upon A Sponge, or rather many, which opens on Thursday, May 10th @ 8:00p.m. and will last until the 16th of June 2012, at TAF (5 Normanou Str., Monastiraki, Athens * GREECE).  So if you’re in Athens*GR during those dates make sure to check it out as it’s an exhibition you wouldn’t want to miss!

Twenty or so Greek designers (passengers of papairlines) leave their creativity run free as they create surprisingly imaginative narrative objects from the iconic dish-washing yellow sponge in an attempt to showcase the different perspectives of design.

This neglected everyday object, is assumed as invisible’ in our daily lives, making it a challenge as the designers of the exhibition ONCE UPON A SPONGE use this material to reinterpret its form and use as well as the perception of visitors.

For papairlines design is not just encountered in windows of high-end shops, but also as something we experience and interact with on a daily basis; for instance a sign, or a widely recognizable piece of furniture, or a love note, or a D.I.Y. object that adapts random and accessible materials. Design is about identifying, analyzing and solving problems in our everyday life as well as commenting on social phenomena and behaviors.  The objects emerging from this process will be landing in TAF.

Concurrently, a collection of photographs showcases a series of spontaneous, D.I.Y objects, created by non-design professionals who, lacking resources, creatively subvert existing objects to solve problems and overcome design weaknesses.

Stay tuned as we’ll soon be ‘boarding’ at TAF and provide you with images of these unique design items which have been created with the yellow iconic sponge!
