(POP)culture | Parking Canopy

Nebraska based designer Garth Britzman has reused recycled soda bottles in a rather creative way.  The project is titled (POP)culture and creates a stunning topographical shade canopy for a vehicle while using recycled soda bottles which have been filled with colored water.  The installation creates an intriguing environment, which appears as if colored leaves are hovering above; this allows the viewer to explore the surface qualities of the bottles at eye level while providing for a visually stunning result.  Undoubtedly, this creative project stimulates the senses as well the fact that we can recycle and reuse materials in utterly creative ways.

In Your Face | Shikhei Goh

Just by looking at these images by “macro addict” Shikhei Goh you immediately understand that the creatures that live amongst us are a piece of art.  Very unique, breathtaking, and almost alien-like.  The intricate detailed images seen here are from Batam Island a 45 minute boat ride south of Singapore, where Goh lives and works.  This series of photographs titled “In Your Face | Insect Photography”  makes us reconsider the way we’ll look at a bug the next time we’ll see one; and makes us realize that sometimes we’re too ‘big’ to see and appreciate the beauty of nature.

2012 Heritage Black Bay | Tudor

In 2010 Swiss watchmaking manufacturer TUDOR introduced the Heritage Collection that was originally designed for expeditions, it included the Heritage Chrono, the Heritage Advisor and the Heritage Black Bay which was lately introduced to the TUDOR family.  The new TUDOR Heritage Black Bay is steeped in the mysterious aura of a hidden bay that gradually yields its secrets to those who venture there, a long-lost treasure returning to the light of day.

The Tudor Heritage collection aims at drawing together some of the brand’s emblematic models, inspired by its past and revisited. The Heritage Black Bay is a perfect embodiment of TUDOR’s vintage spirit.  The Heritage Black Bay model pays tribute to the company’s rich history, with a fresh interpretation of an old standard
created in the 1950s that left a lasting mark on the history of divers’ watches.

Inspired by the lines of the 1954 model, the 2012 Heritage Black Bay is reworked and re-sized to result in a contemporary steel case with a diameter of 41 mm, waterproof to 200Ometers (660 feet) and enhanced by a domed crystal. The elegant black dial, displays generous luminescent hour markers for perfect visibility. Like that of the hour markers, the pink gold of the hands represents a gentle hint of nostalgia, suggesting the characteristic patina of older timepieces. The burgundy red of the unidirectional rotatable bezel, an original feature exclusive to TUDOR – faithful to the original 1970s models – given a matte finish here, to beautiful effect. The 2012 Heritage Black Bay is equipped with the new folding clasp developed by TUDOR, the Heritage Black Bay model is delivered with a black fabric strap and a steel bracelet, or with a black fabric strap and a second strap in exclusive aged leather: another original touch for an elegant, contemporary watch.  The 2012 Heritage Black Bay ensures peerless comfort and incomparable design on the wrist.

Evan Hecox | Dark Island @ Joshua Liner

Joshua Liner Gallery recently presented Dark Island, an exhibition of new mixed-media works by the Denver-based artist Evan Hecox.

Evan Hecox has a roving traveler’s eye—it is the gateway to his art. His passion for exploring unfamiliar cities has taken him to London, Mexico City, and Hanoi. With vintage Polaroid camera in hand, he scours the urban landscape, looking, lingering, absorbing, and editing. The images he captures are not documentary records, per se, but rather impressions of cities left behind in his memory. They set the stage for a stimulating dialogue with personal experience that crosses between different artmaking media and disciplines.

Dark Island—a suite of acrylic and gouache works on vintage newspaper—is inspired by Hecox’s recent hikes across lower Manhattan and west Brooklyn in New York City. As in earlier series inspired by specific locales, the artist focuses here on telling urban fragments: a building façade, rooftop, isolated alleyway, waterfront, or elevated train trellis. Working precisely from photographs, he uses a highly refined process to subtract certain elements, laying down a skeletal vestige of a remembered setting that is then reimagined (or “amplified”) with painterly techniques. Though photography is an early stage in his artmaking practice and employed only as a reference, Hecox relishes the use of his near-obsolete cameras and film, noting, “I like to have a high level of materials and artistry run through the whole process.”

The exhibition is running as of May 24th, until June 23, 2012 at Joshua Liner Gallery, 548 W. 28th Street, 3rd Floor, New York - U.S.A.

Tembo Trunks | Powerless Speakers

Tembo Trunks are the first collapsible earphone amplifiers designed for iPod shuffle, iPod nano & iPod classic.  Using horn acoustics, Tembo Trunks amplify the music from your iPod’s ear-buds up to 80dB of clarity-enhanced stereo sound (3x the regular sound).

Tembo Trunks don’t use batteries or drain power like external speakers or docking stations. By using Tembo Trunks you will get much more battery life from your device than you would from your internal speaker (with the added benefit of amplified, clearer, stereo sound). With no cables, chargers or converters, Tembo Trunks will amplify your music anywhere and anytime (indoors or outdoors). All you need is an iPod and the ear-buds that came with it.

The Tembo Trunks are light, small, flexible, stackable and virtually indestructible – they’re 100% waterproof, shockproof, and dustproof; they’re speakers that aren’t really speakers.  These high-grade silicone rubber speakers have no moving parts or electronic components to fail on you, Tembo Trunks will keep working whenever and wherever you’re sharing your tunes.

The idea was born after Mike and Scott Norrie travelled through Africa while being frustrated at not being able to kick back with some tunes during night in the Veldt.

Once Upon a Sponge Exhibition

Creative platform papairlines proudly present the design art exhibition Once Upon A Sponge, or rather many, which opens on Thursday, May 10th @ 8:00p.m. and will last until the 16th of June 2012, at TAF (5 Normanou Str., Monastiraki, Athens * GREECE).  So if you’re in Athens*GR during those dates make sure to check it out as it’s an exhibition you wouldn’t want to miss!

Twenty or so Greek designers (passengers of papairlines) leave their creativity run free as they create surprisingly imaginative narrative objects from the iconic dish-washing yellow sponge in an attempt to showcase the different perspectives of design.

© papairlines

This neglected everyday object, is assumed as invisible’ in our daily lives, making it a challenge as the designers of the exhibition ONCE UPON A SPONGE use this material to reinterpret its form and use as well as the perception of visitors.

For papairlines design is not just encountered in windows of high-end shops, but also as something we experience and interact with on a daily basis; for instance a sign, or a widely recognizable piece of furniture, or a love note, or a D.I.Y. object that adapts random and accessible materials. Design is about identifying, analyzing and solving problems in our everyday life as well as commenting on social phenomena and behaviors.  The objects emerging from this process will be landing in TAF.

Concurrently, a collection of photographs showcases a series of spontaneous, D.I.Y objects, created by non-design professionals who, lacking resources, creatively subvert existing objects to solve problems and overcome design weaknesses.

Stay tuned as we’ll soon be ‘boarding’ at TAF and provide you with images of these unique design items which have been created with the yellow iconic sponge!
